Sunflower, bows out for the season. This portrait of a sunflower was made in a doorway, illuminated by sunlight, with a shadowed room as backdrop. Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches are in a feeding frenzy on these plants right now. I’ve made portraits of those birds on the sunflowers before. I thought it is time for a portrait of the source of food that sustains them. Thanks for looking. G

Autumn colors in the Columbine Hondo Wilderness. This is the view out the back door where we live in the mountain hamlet of San Cristobal, New Mexico. We’ll be heading out on some personal trips and multiple day photo tours over the next few weeks to photograph the Autumn colors of northern New Mexico. It’s always great to anticipate the potential for making an image. This evening was no exception. The shadows are cast from the setting sun through the trees lining the highway in El Prado, a favorite location of mine. The Columbine, Hondo Wilderness is visible through the clouds.

Driving into Taos through the hamlet of Arroyo Hondo, NM, the fog rolls in heavily. The valley is heavy with fog and getting thicker as I descend and cross the Rio Hondo. Continuing south, the road started to climb out of the valley, the fog thinned, the sun revealed its ghostly self, the trees showed their colors on the hillside and I pulled over on the shoulder to make this image. Straight Down

US Route 64 winds its way from the Outer Banks, NC to the western terminus near Teec Nos Pos in northeast Arizona. Highway 64 crosses the Rio Grande Gorge over the 600 foot high bridge west of Taos New Mexico. Looking straight down from this “steel deck arch bridge”, the seventh highest in the United States, the Rio Grande creates this hour glass rapid making for a fun river run during the spring snow melt.

Baca Park is a small but vital park – wetlands in Taos. In the past I have photographed Hawks and Kingfishers, Red-winged Blackbirds, Great-tailed Grackles, Mallards, Frogs and Toads. A location in town, with a view of Taos Mountain, it can be a beautiful peaceful environment, and a great place for a morning walk. There is also ample opportunity for some great wildlife and nature images.

Basking in the sunlight. I think a more appropriate title might be “The End Of Autumn Sonata”, the last notes played before the winter sets in and the dancing leaves of autumn are silenced. As I stare out of my window I relish the last few notes dancing in the elm tree. Hushed now, a veil of frost descends and the fourth movement begins with the more sombre tones of the wind, in the winter trees. Thanks for looking. G
