White-Breasted Nuthatch

White-Breasted Nuthatch on the Ash tree in San Cristobal, New Mexico. This is a predominant attitude and posture for this little fellow. Scarpering frenetically up and down and around the tree trunks is another. Fun to watch for sure. Having a fast trigger finger definitely helps. You can read more on the White-Breasted Nuthatch here. Thanks for looking. G

Winter Lake, Red Willows, San Luis Valley

Winter lake and red willows in the San Luis Valley, southern Colorado. Made a half day trip here and beyond with friends yesterday. It turned out to be a beautiful winter wonderland of a day. That also includes driving home after dark in an absolute whiteout blizzard. Well… one does engender the other. Thanks for looking. G

Stretch Gate Hondo Mesa, NM

Stretch gate on the Hondo Mesa, Taos NM. Just a slight difference from the last stop here at this location. White out conditions to the north of us this evening. Heading out somewhere tomorrow. Stay tuned for more images. Thanks for looking. G

Roof top Musicians, El Prado, NM

Roof top musicians, on the Mexican import store in El Prado, NM. It looked like a real party up there despite the snow accumulations. There’s more snow due tonight, so this party might get even more raucous by tomorrow if the reverie today is anything to go by! Stay warm and thanks for looking. G

Canyon Towhee Snow, San Cristobal

Canyon Towhee in the snowfall today in, San Cristobal, New Mexico. Stayed in all day and watched the flocks of jays, crows, doves, juncos and this Canyon Towhee who seemed to thoroughly enjoy being ‘out in it’ while occasionally dipping in to the feeder buried under the snow. Thanks for looking. G

Winter Solstice Moonrise

Winter solstice moonrise over the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Colorado. Simple and subtle winter light. No great fanfare or flourish with a sunset, just the white spine of the southern Rocky Mountains highlighted by the almost full moon, that greeted us momentarily, before the clouds enveloped the rest of the sky. Happy solstice and thanks for looking. G

Blanca Peak Massif, Smith Lake

Blanca Peak Massif, from the shore line of frozen Smith Lake in the San Luis Valley. It was a beautifully cold and picture perfect day for image making. Heading back up there for the winter solstice moon rise. Thanks for looking. G

The Road To …

The Road To … “Up in this air you breathed easily, drawing in a vital assurance and lightness of heart. In the highlands you woke up in the morning and thought: Here I am, where I ought to be.”  Izak Dinesen

Mesa Road, Mountain Sunset

Mesa Road, to the Mountain Sunset. This road runs across Taos Pueblo Land, straight as an arrow, to the mountains. It’s fenced off with this traditional style makeshift gate which works so well it’s permanent. It’s a favorite location for watching the sunset on the Sangre de Cristos. Thanks for looking. Stay warm. G

Spotlight On The Sangre De Cristo Mountains

Spotlight on the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, in particular, Vallecito Peak. It’s easy to drive by this scene, though not these last couple of weeks. The mountain calls! It not only calls, but when I do drive by and forget to stop, it often seems to tap me on the shoulder as if to say, “here look!”. In this case we were heading home when one thing and another conspired to get our attention. A cloud to the west created a perfect funnel causing the light to traverse the ridge until it finally settled on the snowy peak where it spotlighted the stage, lingering there for the final bow. The light slowly faded, the curtain came down and the play was over. We waited for a little while longer and then went home. It was a show to remember.  Thanks for looking at another photo of this particular mountain that desired my attention. G
