River, clouds, blue, sky, Colorado. Another bridge crossing the Rio Grande about sixty miles north of where yesterday’s image was taken. Right now the river is looking full and wide as we pass on Highway 142. The spring snow melt should be good this year. One of my favorite places out here. Thanks for looking. G
Sangre de Cristo Mountain snows. Still a lot of snow up there a few days ago in the mountains at the New Mexico, Colorado State Line. And on a stunningly, crystal clear day for a drive during our self imposed quarantine. Home to car, to mountains and back home again. Didn’t see a soul out there, but what’s new? Thanks for looking. Red Barn. Revisiting this favorite old barn in the San Luis Valley to continue documenting it’s demise, this time under threatening rain clouds. It rained heavily, shortly after this shot, which sent me ducking quickly back into the car. It then snowed for a while on the way home. Not too bad a day, though, despite the weather on the road in southern Colorado. Thanks for looking. G
Horned Lark, on a fence post in the village of Capulin, Colorado. I did get a close up of this little fellow, but I prefer this image which is how he looked when I first caught a glimpse as we drove past. Here’s a close up of a Horned Lark from last year in the snow. They usually flock in the thousands, foraging around the roadsides and fields. This one was on it’s own and he didn’t seem to mind. Rio Grande, Blanca Peak, Colorado. Crossing over the Rio Grande this evening on the Lobatos Bridge, afforded us this beautiful view of the river north to the Blanca Massif. It was great to get out on the dirt back roads and not have to negotiate snow and mud. Thanks for looking. G
Cattle dogs, bulls, horses, on a winter round up in La Jara, Colorado. Yes, that’s gonna work!!!
These were obstinate bulls and tenacious cattle dogs. The rancher on horse back told the dogs either to “get ’em” or “bite ’em”. The one blue healer there, on the tail end of the bull, really reveled in it’s work. The things we see on the road. Thanks for looking. G
Almost under control.
Rio Grande Gorge, from the bridge on Hwy 142 Colorado, or as I like to call it, ‘where the Rio Grande Gorge begins’. The rock walls, here, begin to rise above the river, now frozen in the throes of winter. From this spot, I could hear the ice groaning, moaning and stretching against the rocks and bridge pylons, much as my joints feel on cold winter mornings. Thanks for looking. G
Sangre de Cristo Church in the oldest town in Colorado, San Luis. Drove past this church not too long ago and liked the picturesque winter setting. There are a number of churches in this style throughout southern Colorado. I particularly like them, very much. Thanks for looking. G
Pink adobe on the Colorado State Line. This abandoned adobe, abode looks like it was a warm and inviting home at one point in time. In the town of Garcia this building is tucked away across a field nestled under the big cottonwoods. Across the state line, in New Mexico, is the town of Costilla, mostly indistinguishable from Gracia, although I suspect most locals would disagree. Thanks for looking. G
Bunker view, of the white house in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. Winter in the valley is a special time of year. Peace, silence and solitude prevail. A perfect place to perfect the craft of photography. This is one of many potato storage bunkers, (root cellars) around the vast San Luis Valley. Thanks for looking. G
