Flashback, Chama Depot. 06-24-2026

Hello from New Mexico. I hope everyone had a great week. This week, a flashback to 2013 at the Chama Depot, the New Mexico terminus of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. I found it impossible to find the lunar occultation, but I did give it a go. I was probably distracted by the world cup football match playing at the time. Yesterday, I had some minor surgery on my hand that makes it difficult to hold my graphic pen to edit images. I don’t poscess a mouse nor can I use one very well. I’ve used a graphics pen and tablet for 20 years. Things should be back to normal next week. I’ll also be adding a few new pieces to the new work page in a few days.

I shot the above image in July 2013, editing in black and white gave it a historical feel. I seem to recall chasing the train for a couple of days during a week long photo trek with my friend Ron during that summer.

I have made many trips over the years with Ron. And we’ve made many images on those trips. Check out Ron’s website, I think you’ll enjoy his work.

Osprey, First Flight, Chama, New Mexico

Osprey, first flight, along the highway power line nesting platform, Chama, New Mexico. A quick drive around the block today. It was very peaceful and delightful, watching these chicks and mom on the nest. Dad is gone, maybe fishing. We spent about an hour observing their behavior. Thanks for looking in. G

About 30 minutes later, mom has left and is calling from a nearby tree. Sister is saying, “wow bro, look at you, that’s awesome.”

Cumbres And Toltec Scenic Railroad

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad has terminals in Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. It crosses the state line and travels through some of the most spectacular landscape in both states. It’s also fun to park and watch the train, to take some photos, as it climbs under full steam crossing the terrain. This image is from its arrival at the Cumbres Pass depot. Thanks for looking. G

Palomino, Chama, Southern Colorado

Palomino, Chama, southern Colorado. Beautiful boy and gentle soul, in the high country of Colorado. When he wasn’t dozing off, he was yawning out loud. Another great day on a photo trek in in southern Colorado. I’ve spent five days here in the last fourteen. Besides this palomino we also met another gentle soul. A gentle man who shared a little of his life’s story with us. It was a very moving moment and we felt honored that he chose to share it with us. Thanks for looking. G
