Mural, San Luis, Colorado

Mural, San Luis, Colorado. Stopped in to San Luis this morning. The town is reputed to be the “Oldest Town” in Colorado, it says so on a sign! I wont dispute that fact. It was fun to hoof it around the little town, with my friend Larry and make some images. I liked this non-political mural and the shadows from the latilla/coyote fence, constructed from young aspens, juxtaposed with the diagonal field furrows. Thanks for looking. G

Sangre de Cristo Church, San Luis, Colorado

Sangre de Cristo Church in the oldest town in Colorado, San Luis. Drove past this church not too long ago and liked the picturesque winter setting. There are a number of churches in this style throughout southern Colorado. I particularly like them, very much. Thanks for looking. G

Chicks. Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk Nest

Chicks. Two very curious juvenile Red-tailed Hawks on the Nest in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. I’ve been watching this nest and another for some time. The other nest appeared to be recently abandoned but these two chicks at this nest site are thriving very well. By July/August they will be practicing flying lessons. I’ll keep an eye on them and fill you in on their progress. Thanks for looking. G

Palomino, Chama, Southern Colorado

Palomino, Chama, southern Colorado. Beautiful boy and gentle soul, in the high country of Colorado. When he wasn’t dozing off, he was yawning out loud. Another great day on a photo trek in in southern Colorado. I’ve spent five days here in the last fourteen. Besides this palomino we also met another gentle soul. A gentle man who shared a little of his life’s story with us. It was a very moving moment and we felt honored that he chose to share it with us. Thanks for looking. G

Catholic Church, San Luis, Colorado, Built 1886

Catholic Church in the oldest town of San Luis, Colorado. The church has a date of 1886. Compared to a European time frame, not that old. There are folks here in the valley who know, in recent history, their descendent’s that built this church. There’s something about the history of the west that draws me more and more to this place. Thanks for looking. G

Ranch Gate In San Luis, Colorado

A steer skull ranch gate in San Luis, Colorado. I’ve been passing this scene for many years. I finally made an image that I’d seen in my minds eye. I love the way it is suspended, floating against the misty sky creating a surreal feeling. Thanks for looking. G

San Luis Shady Nook Cafe

San Luis, Colorado, Shady Nook Cafe. Not that the cafe is named “shady nook’ rather it’s a cafe with a shady nook to enjoy a morning coffee. On the road this week for a five day photo tour of southern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G

Blanca Peak, Colorado

blanca_peak_range_colorado_0171_0173-3878971
Blanca Peak Range in the Rocky Mountains. These mountain peaks dominate the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado and can be seen from the Rio Grande Gorge bridge on a clear day, about 75 miles to the south. I made this image on a trip to San Luis and Fort Garland yesterday after the heavy overnight snowfall. Thanks for looking.

Mountain Snows, San Luis, Colorado

Traveling through San Luis, (reputed to be the oldest town in Colorado) today, the shadows were spreading long as the sun set. I liked the juxtaposition of the school building and the mountains, glowing in the waning light.
