Crooked Cross, San Luis Valley, Colorado. I like the casual, rakish tilt of the cross on this authentic belfry with the exposed bell. These days the majority of bells are enclosed to keep out the pigeons, doves and other critters, you know, bats in the belfry. Thanks for looking. G
Santa Teresita de Jesus Chapel, El prado, NM. Driving by a few weeks ago, I just had to pull over and snap this image. Here’s another image I made in the winter of 1989 that I posted it on my website on a winter’s day in March 2007 and funnily enough it looked like this today when the clouds lifted off the mountain. White cross and shadows at the Saint Francis Church, in Ranchos de Taos. If you’ve downloaded my July Journal of Photography then you will be familiar with this image. It’s a photo from many years ago that had eluded me until the last few weeks. I like the simplicity of much of the architecture I find here in New Mexico. If I never leave this state, I doubt I’d ever run out of subject matter. Thanks for looking. G

Four crosses and a reflection in Abiquiu, NM. As I lined up the lens on these iconic crosses at the Penitente Morada in Abiquiu, it must have drifted in front of the wing mirror and caught the reflection of the tree in the mirror. I’ve used this technique before intentionally, but this was a surprise. Sometimes accidents happen. Thanks for looking. G
Adobe walls, La Santa Rosa de Lima on the banks of the Rio Chama, Abiquiu. Someone, during the last week or so, had reassembled the rotting old wood cross that was replaced a few years ago and left laying in the cholla cactus near by. Yesterday we met a lady, a member of the parish, who had planted young rose bushes. There are bottles of water stored next to the building, labeled, “Please use to water rose bushes”. I told her I would water them when I visit again next week. She was grateful. Thanks for looking. G

Chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Cañon, Taos NM. One cross many shadows. This little chapel is adorned with at least nine crosses on the outside. If one counts them and all the shadows, then I’m sure this is a very blessed place, and iconic New Mexicana. Always a favorite stop on a photo tour. Thanks for looking. G
Chapel of Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos Talpa, New Mexico. Time of day and more importantly the time of year, in this case, helped create the resulting image. At this time of year the sun is almost at it’s most southerly. The sky was overcast and the light on the scene was very diffused when we arrived, on this second day of a three day grand tour. I’d already framed up the three black crosses on the chapel, and as I settled on the final composition the sun emerged momentarily from behind the clouds and the little shadow from the cross on the left popped out. The shadow added a further element to a scene I’d pre-visualized, without any more preparation than just showing up at the location. Always prepared to be amazed … thanks for looking. G
