Rainbow, Highway, Taos Valley, New Mexico. Highway 522 runs from Taos to the Colorado, state line. I was heading home after a day in Las Vegas, NM, sitting on a couple of different benches around town, chatting about photography and a hundred other subjects, with good friend R. David Marks. In this image I’m looking south towards Taos. After spotting the rainbow in my rear view mirror I pulled over and shot this. There is a confusion of light rays dashing every which way. I don’t mind. Highway 522, northern New Mexico. Can’t beat the ride home with epic views and skies. On a clear day we can see the snow covered, fourteen thousand foot peaks of southern Colorado. The mountain ahead, is San Antonio Mountain, an extinct volcano and largest free standing mountain in the lower 48 states, not a part of any mountain chain, at least that’s what I’ve be told. I like being able to look out and see forever. There’s a song title there, I think you know it. Thanks for looking. G

Ute Mountain Tree, Costilla, New Mexico. The tree and numerous others, flank the old volcano on the Taos Volcanic Field. The direction of the prevailing wind is quite obvious. No wind today though at Ute Mountain, just cold. Thanks for looking. G

Highway Sky, Taos, New Mexico. I wanted to create a feeling of what it was like driving in to the Taos Valley today. The highway was highlighted by reflected light from the distant cumulus clouds. The foothills were backlit and very dark. The cumulus clouds were lit by the sun shining above the storm clouds overhead, giving an indication how low the storm clouds really were. And then… the skies opened up and it just now stopped raining here in San Cristobal, five hours later. Thanks for looking. G

Highway Sky – Smokey Sunset

Highway sky. Heading south in to Taos, NM on highway 522, the sunset casts an eerie twilight glow over the mesa roadway and reflects off the cloud poised over the Sangre de Cristo foothills. The sun setting behind and through the fire smoke, filtering the light from the west, created this effect. I like the look of the image but the smoke in the atmosphere is getting tiresome.
