High Country, Clay Bells, and Duran, New Mexico.

Highway 64 passes through a most beautiful area of northern New Mexico. The road stretches from the Outer Banks, NC, and ends at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, depending on your direction of travel. In the photo below, the highway passes through the coniferous forests and aspen groves near Hopewell Lake. Join me on a photo tour, and I’ll take you here in wide-open spaces in the high country.

This ornament, hanging by our front door, broke recently, so I saved a few of the clay bells and photographed them. There’s always time for a quick still life in the studio.

The last image is one from the road in Duran, New Mexico, of the “Wm. Hindi Store, General Merchandise” where a tourist is always welcome… still. Back in 2009 and 2010, I was on the road frequently on assignment for NMSU documenting their agricultural extension campuses. It was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the people and places I got to shoot. One trip took me to Corona, NM. I passed through Duran where I found this location. I still wonder about these once-thriving communities.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Highway 64, New Mexico

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Highway 64, New Mexico. The bridge spans the canyon and river, a meer 600 feet below, carrying Highway 64 with one terminus in the Outer Banks, NC and the other at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona. The storms move through here fast and with deliberate intention. I’m finding some fun images throwing virtual darts at the archives most of today. Stay tuned for another image from New Mexico in Chaco Canyon tomorrow. Thanks for looking. G

Hopewell Lake Aspen Moonrise

Hopewell Lake Aspen Moonrise. The moon rises over the aspens at Hopewell Lake off Highway 64, New Mexico. Temperatures dropped to 30 degrees late this afternoon as the aspens glowed warm in the setting sunshine. The moon, a jewel in the winter blue sky, rose silently above it all. Thanks for looking. G

Mountain Meadow Cottonwood, Taos NM

Mountain meadow cottonwood, Taos NM. Here is a tree, with an arrow on Highway 64 to get your attention in case you didn’t see it. We stopped here today to make some images of this young cottonwood. I’ve been watching it for the last week. Today, it was really glowing with the mountain meadow as a backdrop. This was the second stop on a two day mini photography workshop. I love what I do, I’m very fortunate and grateful. Thanks for looking. G

Sometimes I just have to get out of the car and make an image of the highway ahead … where I’m going.

Highway 64 near Hopewell Lake, New Mexico. It was -6°F this morning on the road to Ah-shi-sle-pah for a private two day photography adventure. The cold was too cold to get out. I wound down the window made a quick iPhone image, poured myself another cup of tea and headed off to meet my client. Stay tuned for up coming images from the trip.
