Breaking through the snow today. These three little fronds, albeit, a weed made their appearance known as I walked through the field. In all of the two acres they caught my eye. Pretty, aren’t they? Thanks for looking. G
Lobatos Bridge shadows crossing the frozen solid Rio Grande in southern Colorado. The bridge is a favorite stopping point for making images looking upstream on the Rio Grande to the Blanca massif. The mountains are hidden in the clouds on this day. We made some shots of our shadows standing on the bridge instead. Down below in the snow drift on the ice we spotted elk and coyote tracks. Ice road in San Acacio, Colorado. Just over a week ago it was 16 degrees fahrenheit at 3pm and the hoar frost hadn’t budged on the trees. Today, in the southern San Luis Valley, it was 47 degrees fahrenheit. Quite a shift from this ice road skating rink to a sloppy muddy mess. We’ll take the moisture and won’t complain too much. Lobatos steel bridge, crosses the Rio Grande in southern Colorado. On a full day photo adventure today crossing the Rio Grande, the river below us is solid ice. The road way on the bridge is ice, so we skated across it, holding on to the rails. Just kidding, but we had to be sure footed. Thanks for looking. G
Winter lake and red willows in the San Luis Valley, southern Colorado. Made a half day trip here and beyond with friends yesterday. It turned out to be a beautiful winter wonderland of a day. That also includes driving home after dark in an absolute whiteout blizzard. Well… one does engender the other. Thanks for looking. G
Blanca Peak Massif, from the shore line of frozen Smith Lake in the San Luis Valley. It was a beautifully cold and picture perfect day for image making. Heading back up there for the winter solstice moon rise. Thanks for looking. G
Mallard duck on ice. I love the way these little creatures behave deliberately. Paddle to the edge of the ice, waddle out onto the ice, stand there and do nothing. Time passes. I made some images and moved on. A little while later, when I return, the Mallard is standing stock still, in the same position. I can only assume, enjoying a moment, warming up in the morning sun is a cross species trait. Thanks for looking. G
Ice patterns on the Rio Chama, Abiquiu New Mexico. Exploring, seeking, and open to receiving. Following are some words close to my heart from photographer Dewitt Jones. “The banquet is spread constantly, with no thought of whether anyone will attend. If I were receptive enough, perhaps I would see it in everything. But I’m not, so photography is one of the tools I use to help me concentrate, to help me see deeply, to block out all that is extraneous and see that which is essential.”

Rio Grande ice and red willows, southern Colorado. Winter is here, where the Rio Grande Gorge begins. When I come across a pristine scene like this and the snow is beginning to fall, the river ice is expanding daily and the red willows are glowing on the river banks … well I just want to shout … “welcome winter. it’s about time.” It’s been a while since we saw temperatures of anything near what they should be at this time of year. Well, they are here now! Thanks for looking. G
Ice designs, on the Rio Grande in southern Colorado. I made a series of images that reminded me of aerial landscapes, except that the patterns and designs were only twenty feet below my vantage point on the bridge. A new fascination… scenes from winter, “below, from not so far above.” Thanks for looking. G
