The moon is 99.9% full tonight but rose well after the clouds dispersed from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, so no photo tonight. I hope you will enjoy this image. Moonrise in a sienna sky, over the Sangre de Cristos, New Mexico. Life from the deck in San Cristobal. The moon rose powerful this evening, conquered and ruled the dome of the sky. The only time I have not seen the moonrise over the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is when it’s cloudy or I’m out of town, and… weather permitting I’ll see the moonrise in the place I am. Rural Colorado and moonrise in the San Luis Valley at the old barn. Sixteen degrees fahrenheit is cold. When the moon rose it warmed up the sky, the valley, my hands and heart. What an evening to drive into the hinterlands. Standing here in this field where the old crops are mown, the new crops not yet sown, where a coyote howled and all was still save the moon rising silently behind the clouds over the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Winter solstice moonrise over the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Colorado. Simple and subtle winter light. No great fanfare or flourish with a sunset, just the white spine of the southern Rocky Mountains highlighted by the almost full moon, that greeted us momentarily, before the clouds enveloped the rest of the sky. Grand view of thanksgiving eve moon rising over Vallecito Peak, in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains. I wanted to share this grand view that we saw from the highway that runs north – south from where we live, across the mesa, toTaos. Here’s the image I posted from that day. This expansive scene captivated me upon a second review of the shots I made after I stitched these three images together. It’s a big, beautifully panorama of the mountains of northern New Mexico. Gorgeous moonrise over Vallecito Peak in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains. The moon rose over the subdued rosy hues of the snowy peak. It climbed slowly and deliberately, creeping inch by inch until it cleared the snow-capped peak. Finally it appeared to linger for a moment, and glimmered like a giant pearl, as it kissed the crest adieu. A beautiful end to a gorgeous day in New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G
Hopewell Lake Aspen Moonrise. The moon rises over the aspens at Hopewell Lake off Highway 64, New Mexico. Temperatures dropped to 30 degrees late this afternoon as the aspens glowed warm in the setting sunshine. The moon, a jewel in the winter blue sky, rose silently above it all. Thanks for looking. G
Full Harvest Moon rise, over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, from San Cristobal, NM. Cutting right through some haze for the first few moments as it rose and then boom… it was crystal clear. I liked this image because I can still see the the ridge line of the mountains giving the whole scene context. Now, time to put on a jacket and wander out to sit and bath in the moonlight, sip a little whiskey and ponder all the beauty out there. Thanks for looking. G
Magpie moon, in the cottonwood tree San Cristobal, NM. The moon rose crystal clear over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico as our resident Magpie mimicked my calls seemingly oblivious of the splendor around us. Further south, the moon rose shrouded in clouds of fire smoke. It set this morning, around 4:30am resembling a blood orange through the thick smoke that settled across the valley.
