Riparian habitat, Bosque Del Apache NWR, New Mexico. Riparian habitat excites me and there’s plenty of it along the Rio Grande. This time of year the reserve awaits the return of the Sandhill Cranes. The Snow Geese will join them soon and the skies will be filled with primordial calls and the sound of wings beating, a joy to hear and see. Thanks for looking. G

Great Blue Heron, at the Bosque Del Apache, National Wildlife Refuge, in New Mexico. I popped into the Bosque del Apache (Woods of the Apache) earlier this week and spotted this familiar fellow, who always occupies this same spot year after year. It’s always nice to visit “the Bosque”, one of my favorites places ever. Thanks for looking. G

Soaring, Snow Geese, Bosque Del Apache

Soaring with Snow Geese in the Bosque Del Apache, National Wildlife Refuge NM. Last one from the refuge for a while. Sometimes I come across an image from the archives that intrigues me, like the two previous images of the heron. The snow geese, lit by morning sunlight, against a quintessential blue, New Mexico sky, brought me directly back to the moment when I made this image. I’ll keep returning to the Bosque del Apache in actuality and memory. Thanks for looking. G

Bosque del Apache, National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, NM. Marsh grasses abound in one of the greatest wildlife refuges in the country. Look it up. You will find the Bosque del Apache is the number one place to see Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese in their winter playground in south central New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G

Sandhill Cranes Sunset In The Marshes

Sandhill Cranes sunset in the marshes at the Bosque del Apache. There are so many photo ops one encounters in this magnificent National Wildlife Refuge in the Rio Grande Valley southeast of Socorro, New Mexico. Today I chose this one which pleases me very much. In this case it depicts an evening sunset across the marshes with the silhouettes of the Sandhill Crane settling in for the evening. Thanks for looking. G

Javelina Tribe, Bosque Del Apache

Highway 285, Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.

Javelina Tribe, on the road in Bosque Del Apache. I’ve only ever seen a single Javelina in the past. These were a few of a larger tribe on this day in the National Wildlife Refuge. They came out of the brush, went into the brush, came back out of the brush and returned to the brush one more time, and then they were gone! Thanks for looking. G

Bosque Del Apache Reflections

bosque_reflections_4302_4303-9329124

Bosque del Apache reflections, San Antonio, NM. As the marshes fill and the cottonwood leaves succumb to the cold nights, the National Wildlife Refuge, becomes that “a refuge”. In a way it becomes a refuge for all who visit, wildlife and us humans. We certainly felt it this week in the Bosque del Apache, NWR. Thanks for looking. G
