Rio Grande del Norte National Monument

Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. Today we made a drive in to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. On the west side of the Rio Grande Gorge the road meanders leisurely north to the Colorado border. Pronghorn, Elk and many birds accompany us along the way. Seasonal lakes, ancient causeways and abandoned dwellings are reasons to get out of the car and contemplate those who have passed this way. If you have a penchant for unobstructed views, no crowds, peace and quiet, solitude … shall I go on? Join me on a photo tour if this pristine environment is for you.

Morning Magpies in the Juniper trees, San Cristobal, New Mexico. The bright light coming from the west filled in the usually dark Juniper trees adding a somewhat surreal glow and it popped for me, as though I had a very large fill flash lighting this scene.

Crescent Moon And Blossoms

Crescent moon through blossoms. I love to line up the moon through the trees in the garden and watch it set across the Taos Plateau. Tonight was special as the crab apple tree had begun to blossom. What a difference a day makes from the cold rain yesterday. In this image you can see “earthshine” illuminating the rest of the moon that isn’t lit by the sun. Here is an image from May 12, 2009 of the full moon and blossoms. I think with all the warm weather the trees are blooming early this year. Thanks for looking.

Clouds Lifting On Taos Mountain. The temperatures over the last few days in Taos and it’s environs have reached 72 degrees Fahrenheit, (22.2 degrees Celsius) with lots of sunshine. A big shift from a couple of weeks ago in the scene above. Thanks for looking. G

Raptor Nest In The San Luis Valley, Colorado.

Raptor nest in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. Although this tree has fallen and the nest is close to the ground, from time to time, I come across images that remind me of what a great location this is. Over the many years that I’ve conducted photo tours in this area my guests really respond to it’s location, it’s serenity and vastness. Here is another view of the nest on a winters night when we made a trip there under the full moon.

Looking up where simplicity thrills me. I don’t have to wander far, just a few paces from the house, to stand gazing upward to see the cottonwoods stretching out overhead as if reaching for the other’s touch. Thanks for looking. G

House Finch

Cold snowy day here in San Cristobal. This House Finch joined four or five dozen Dark-eyed Juncos at the bird feeder. I think, at some point, it got overwhelmed by the frenzy over the bird seed I’d put out earlier. It retreated to the Ash tree close by, where this nice ‘bokeh’ (blurred background), isolated the bird and the branches. I made one image before it flew back to give the bird feeder another try … here it is.

My Neighbor’s Tree

My neighbor’s tree. I walked outside this evening and was struck by the light on this tree. I can see it, and the foothills beyond, from the kitchen window. I often enjoy viewing the tree in the lay of the land throughout the day. I like to think that it was planted in just the perfect spot. Thanks for looking. G
