Las Trampas Church On The High Road

Las Trampas Church of San Jose de Gracia de las Trampas. I know, I know, it’s that church again. I made this image yesterday on a High Road photo tour. We were looking for some alternate angles to the usual, oft seen views. The grave marker was photographed by Ansel Adams in the 1940’s. Specifically, he made a tighter cropped image of the cross with the adobe wall as the background. Knowing that Ansel had stood in this very spot can inspire almost anyone. As the sky was overcast and lighting low key I put the camera on the floor and created the low angle view using the grave marker to fill a chunk of the frame and placed the cross prominently over the sky to the right. I thought it created a dramatic and gothic look to the whole scene. Thirty minutes later as we descended into the the Gorge and headed north to the west rim trail along the Rio Grande Gorge the sun burst out and it looked like a different day. This prompted us to recall the saying, “if you don’t like the weather in New Mexico, wait five minutes.” … or in our case, thirty minutes. Thanks for looking. G

San José de Gracia de Las Trampas, NM

San José de Gracia de Las Trampas, NM. Yesterday on a photo tour on the High Road to Taos the light was stunning in the mountains, Spanish villages, hamlets and in particular, on this old adobe church. High above the Taos valley in the slightly cooler temperatures, the air was free and clear of the waffling fire smoke we’ve seen in Taos for the last few weeks. A popular spot and photo op on the High Road, the church of San José de Gracia, built between 1760 and 1776, is one of the least-altered examples of a Spanish Colonial Pueblo mission church. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Thanks for looking. G

San Jose Mission, Laguna Pueblo

San Jose, (Saint Joseph) mission church was built in 1699.  The church is built in the early Pueblo style of architecture, and is constructed of field stone, adobe, mortar, and plaster. The interior is adorned with Laguna Pueblo art paintings and stations of the cross. We arrived here yesterday, one of the last stops on a five day photo safari around northern New Mexico. The sun was low in the western sky and the church was shrouded in shadow. At first I blocked the sun behind the cross, that gave me a decent exposure on the building and cross, and worked with what I first had in mind. When I moved the camera slightly and pointed it directly at the sun, it gave me an under exposed image of the building and foreground cross. The resulting image was more satisfying, and also created the sun star that seemed fitting for the location and subject matter. Thanks for looking. G

Mission San José de Laguna

Mission San José de Laguna. The church of St. Joseph, Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico. We stopped in here on a very cold morning. The sun’s warmth on our backs took the chill off, we began to thaw, which, in turn allowed us to stand a little taller. Here is a brief history of the Spanish Mission.

Belfry, Raven, Full Moon, Garcia, Colorado

Belfry, Raven, Full Moon, Garcia, Colorado. The almost full moon, a belfry cross and a raven tonight in Garcia, Colorado. We made an evening drive to watch the moon rise over the Sangre de Cristo mountains in southern Colorado. It turned out to be a beautiful evening with crisp winter light on this scene. I like to think the raven enjoyed the view too, but I doubt it. He sat, perched there, faffing the whole time.

Adobe Route, Free Climbing Pigeons

Adobe Route, Free Climbing Pigeons. “I got this… I got this!” at the St. Francis Church Ranchos de Taos, NM. I’m guessing here… perhaps they were eating seeds they discovered in the mud or bits of gravel for their crop. One thing I’m certain about, as I watched them work their way up the building, flying would have been the easier route to take. Thanks for looking. G

Mission Church of Santo Tomas, Abiquiu, NM

Clouds over the Mission Church of Santo Tomas in the mesa top Pueblo of Abiquiu, New Mexico. I made this image four years ago on a photo tour to Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch and the Chama River Valley and many other locations on the road getting there. The sky on the particular summer afternoon was broken up by these wonderful cloud formations which appear to be whipped up by the very large cross. Thanks for looking. G
