Harvest Moon Rise, And More.

A couple of nights ago I walked out to our driveway to watch this month’s Harvest moon rise over the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I watched this celestial event in its entirety, unencumbered by foreground buildings and landscape features on a crisp, autumn evening. It was so clear it felt like I could reach out and touch the moon. I hope you got to watch it where you are.

Today I had to get a rock chip repaired in my windshield. I had an hour to kill so I wandered around the neighborhood and came up with the following shot.

Earlier this evening I had another wander through my hard drives. I found this picture of a Javelina. This was from a few years ago in the Bosque del Apache NWR. It’s sort of appropriate as I’m planning a trip there this coming November. It’s been a couple of years since I was there last so I’m looking forward to going again. I recall the moment when this little guy popped up from an arroyo, surprising me, and ran across the trail ahead.

This image came up in my favorites on my phone. In 2019, my friend Ron and I ended a great five-day photo trek in Lamy, NM. He went on and I went home. I’ve caught the train here many times and ridden it to Los Angeles and back. The Amtrak train still stops here on its route from Chicago to LA.

Going back further still, I came across this beautiful fall scene taken at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taos, NM. I thought it worthy of a repeat performance on my website.

If you’d like to see fall colors in the high desert, I still have a few days open between now and the end of October for my photography tour/workshops in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

As always, thank you for looking. Have a great week. G

Harvest Moon, Sangre De Cristos, October, 2020

Harvest Moon rising over the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, New Mexico, October 2020. The orange color is another fire smoke filter, so to speak. The actual full Harvest moon was today around 3 pm. In this image, the moon was 99.1% of full. Well, we won’t quibble. Thanks for looking and keep looking up. G

Harvest Moon Rising, Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Harvest moon rising, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico. A great photo tour today. Thank you Mike. When I got home this was the view of the shimmering, shining, harvest moon rise… out the kitchen window. It will be full tomorrow night. Thanks for looking. G

Harvest Moon Rising Over Taos Pueblo

The almost full Harvest Moon rising over the Sangre de Cristo foothills at the Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. I waited ten minutes at this location along the highway through El Prado, watching amidst roaring traffic noise, waiting with the camera trained on this spot where the phone app said the moon will rise. The app was correct and I made a sequence of images from the moment it peeped over the trees. As it rose all noise from the highway seemed to cease. I heard birds and crickets and the sound of a light breeze in the trees. The moon silenced my world in that moment. Thanks for looking and continuing to look. G

Harvest Moon, Taos Volcanic Plateau

Harvest moon setting over the Taos Volcanic Plateau. I went out early this morning to watch the full harvest moon setting across the plateau. The scene was augmented by clouds and mists around the hills. This image came together nicely and I made a number of other images in the Arroyo Hondo valley after the sun rise. I’ll post a few of those shots in the coming days. Thanks for looking. G

La Luna Rising Over The Sangre De Cristos

La Luna rising over the Sangre De Cristo Mountains tonight. Some folks think that some kind of warm colored moon at this time of year makes it the”Harvest Moon”. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn’t. The color of the moon is insignificant to the fact that it is a “Harvest Moon”. The closest full moon to the fall equinox is the “Harvest Moon”. Ergo, the fall equinox is on or around September 22nd, the October 5 full moon will be the official “Harvest Moon”. That said, EarthSkyNews posted this today regarding tonights moon. Thanks for looking. G
