Magpie Moon, San Cristobal, NM

Magpie moon, in the cottonwood tree San Cristobal, NM. The moon rose crystal clear over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico as our resident Magpie mimicked my calls seemingly oblivious of the splendor around us. Further south, the moon rose shrouded in clouds of fire smoke. It set this morning, around 4:30am resembling a blood orange through the thick smoke that settled across the valley. As always thanks for looking. G

Valley Of The Gods, Utah

Valley Of The Gods, in the Bears Ears National Monument, Utah. Go there if you get a chance. This image is from a few years ago. It still moves me to the point of distraction, and I madly want to be there. Thanks for looking. G

“Flower” Moon Rise San Cristobal

“Flower” moon rise over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, San Cristobal, NM. Earlier in the day we made a drive through the Moreno Valley where the roads were lined with flags from Eagle Nest to Angel Fire celebrating Memorial Day. We intended to catch the moon rise there, perhaps over the Eagle Nest Lake. We enjoyed the drive and a picnic supper, but instead headed home for a crystal clear view of this “Flower” moon from our deck. Thanks for looking. G

January 01 2018, Super Moon Rise

January 01 2018, Super Moon Rise over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. We took a drive north this evening, to the Wild and Scenic Rivers in the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, to watch the super moon rising over the Sangre de Cristos. It was cold and the wind chill colder. The coyotes chimed in about the same time the moon came up and began their howling and chattering. It was a pristine, fitting, moment to start the new year off well. Happy New Year and thanks for looking. G

New Years Eve Moon Rise

New years eve ladder and moon rise El Prado (the meadows), Taos, New Mexico. We followed the moon rise this evening, from the Rio Grande Gorge, north towards Tres Piedras and east and south into El Prado where the moon was rising near this favorite location of the ladder that points to the sky. A very happy new year… and as always… thank you for looking. G

Three Peaks Sunset Crescent Moon

Three Peaks Sunset Crescent Moon. Tonight I drove to the turnout to watch the crescent moon set. The orange layer is the fire smoke pollution happening in the area. Above that, the sky is pretty crystal clear and the crescent moon stands out in all it’s glory along with earthshine and a planet. I’m at a loss as to which planet. Any ideas? At this time of year, with predominantly clear skies overhead, living in the high desert is a magical earthly experience. Thanks for looking. G

Setting Moon Across The Plateau

Setting Moon across the Taos Volcanic Plateau. The subtle hues in the morning landscape emboldened by the setting moon made for an early morning drive to remember. As we traveled south the moon traversed the cloud layer. Deciding where to pull over and make the image wasn’t too difficult, but with the moon fading fast behind the cloud we called it at this spot. Thanks for looking. G
