Juvenile Golden Eagle And Sandhill Cranes

Juvenile Golden Eagle at the Monte Vista NWR, flew through and “dive bombed” numerous groups of Sandhill Cranes, talons and beak flashing, causing a continuous uproar and frenzied lift offs of the cranes. The eagle failed miserably at taking any prey but it was a sight to behold at how much fear they can instill in their quarry. Thanks for looking. G

Sandhill Cranes Sunset In The Marshes

Sandhill Cranes sunset in the marshes at the Bosque del Apache. There are so many photo ops one encounters in this magnificent National Wildlife Refuge in the Rio Grande Valley southeast of Socorro, New Mexico. Today I chose this one which pleases me very much. In this case it depicts an evening sunset across the marshes with the silhouettes of the Sandhill Crane settling in for the evening. Thanks for looking. G

Evening Fly In Bosque del Apache

Evening fly in of Sandhill Cranes in the Bosque del Apache, National Wildlife Refuge. The symmetry of these creatures makes me marvel. One minute their wing stroke is all akimbo, followed by this beautiful synchronous attitude. Thanks for looking. G

Sandhill Crane Bosque Del Apache

Sandhill Crane, Bosque del Apache (Woods of the Apache), Socorro, New Mexico. I was feeling nostalgic and talking to a friend and client about a potential trip to the “Bosque” this coming winter and decided to post a photo of a Sandhill Crane. Perhaps it will manifest into a few trips there to the Bosque del Apache this coming winter. Love the Sandhills. Click on the image to expand for effect. Thanks for looking. G

Sandhill Cranes Heading North

Sandhill Cranes heading north. For the last couple of weeks I’ve seen and heard the Sandhill cranes overhead on their northward migration. The cranes navigate using the Rio Grande, which passes about ten miles west of us. I may be wrong in assuming this, but I like to think that by keeping the river to the west and with the snow capped peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the east, also aids in the cranes navigation. The Sandhill Crane Festival in Monte Vista, was happening last weekend, about a two hour drive from home. We didn’t have to travel that far … we only had to stop, listen and look up. Thanks for looking. G

Quarai Ruins, NM

quarai_ruin_salinas_missions_a_2054_2056-9143954
Quarai Ruins, Salinas Missions National Monuments, New Mexico. During my trip here today with my client, we experienced this historical location under blue skies and pristine lighting conditions which concluded our photography adventure on the road in New Mexico. That said, there was one other sublime moment today when a flock of Sandhill Cranes flew high overhead, their rattling, bugling, primordial calls could be heard echoing off these ancient walls as they have done for millennium on their annual migrations. Pausing for a moment, I acknowledged some grander design that exists beyond these man made testaments to our short existence on this planet that go un-noticed by those creatures a thousand feet above.

Sandhill Cranes, In Flight, Monte Vista NWR

Sandhill Cranes in flight at the Monte Vista NWR, Colorado. It’s always fun to make the two hour drive from Taos to Monte Vista. The National Wildlife Refuge is just south of the town of Monte Vista in the eastern San Luis Valley. There is plenty to see on the drive there and thousands of Sandhill Cranes are the payoff in the NWR at the end of the journey. That said … if we are lucky…  the sunset on the Sangre de Cristo mountains on the drive home really makes for a spectacular finish to a day of photography. The Sandhill Cranes will be flying through there again in early March. That’s when we’ll make another trip north to spend time with them. Thanks for looking.
