Ute Mountain Tree, Costilla, New Mexico. The tree and numerous others, flank the old volcano on the Taos Volcanic Field. The direction of the prevailing wind is quite obvious. No wind today though at Ute Mountain, just cold. Thanks for looking. G
Monte Vista NWR, Colorado. Sandhill Cranes, and Canada Geese. There was a lot of coming and going today during an afternoon trip to Colorado across the San Luis Valley. We saw thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese at this hub on the birds migratory flyway north. The primordial calls of the cranes and geese echoed through the trees and over the marshes, as they have done for millions of years. Snow plant, Valdez NM. I think I will rest here a while, until spring comes. I feel a lot like this plant. Gathering energy, ready for bursting out like its buds in spring time. This image was in Valdez at the San Antonio Church, one day following a snow storm. Two feet of snow around the neighborhood covered most everything. Today, after temps in the mid fifties, most of the snow is gone. Thanks for looking. G
Moon, Jupiter, Rising, in the skies over Taos, New Mexico. Not a bad way to start the day. Up early, watching the celestial bodies traverse the sky into daylight. The Moon, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn along with Antares the red heart of the Scorpion constellation in beautiful unison. A nice cup of tea nearby and a camera in hand, the day tends to go rather well after a start like that. Thanks for looking. G
Golden Eagle silhouette, with the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, southern Colorado. We whipped past this scene, but quickly pulled over and got a couple of shots of the Golden Eagle on the power pole. They are a magnificent sight to see in their domain and their domain is everywhere. Thanks for looking. G
Palomino, Chama, southern Colorado. Beautiful boy and gentle soul, in the high country of Colorado. When he wasn’t dozing off, he was yawning out loud. Another great day on a photo trek in in southern Colorado. I’ve spent five days here in the last fourteen. Besides this palomino we also met another gentle soul. A gentle man who shared a little of his life’s story with us. It was a very moving moment and we felt honored that he chose to share it with us. Thanks for looking. G
Valdez, New Mexico, the Church of San Antonio in this little mountain village. The snow piled up during the last snow storm. A local in the village told us that they measured 28 inches of snow during the last storm. Some of it has been pushed up against the corner of the building. The rest of the snow is fast turning the dirt roads to mud! Welcome to New Mexico in the spring. It is a beautiful building, proudly attended to by the members of the community of Valdez. Lobatos Bridge shadows crossing the frozen solid Rio Grande in southern Colorado. The bridge is a favorite stopping point for making images looking upstream on the Rio Grande to the Blanca massif. The mountains are hidden in the clouds on this day. We made some shots of our shadows standing on the bridge instead. Down below in the snow drift on the ice we spotted elk and coyote tracks. Blue Door, Garcia, Colorado. What the road passes. A day trip around the block in southern Colorado. On this trip we made a big figure eight through the San Luis Valley. We stopped in Costilla and Garcia to photograph some of the abandoned homesteads. Directly over my shoulder, an abandoned Conoco gas station, formally owned by Mr. Cordova beckoned us. Marco pulled over. His dog, who was getting it’s exercise running behind the car, stopped and visited too! Marco told us that, when he was eight years old, he would trade Mr. Cordova a handful of pennies for a handful of bubble gum! I love my job and the people I meet.
