Crested Butte, High Country Colorado, 10-04-2023

Greetings from San Cristobal, NM. This week some images from a trip to Crested Butte in the high country of Colorado.

Last week, I mentioned a trip around the block, so this week we made a trip to the area around Crested Butte, in Colorado. We went for the fall color and also wanted to take a trip with our sweet girl, Coco, our labradoodle. It was a wonderful road trip, and we observed our 13-year-old in the back seat, always in the rearview mirror, and, more importantly, enjoying the great outdoors. She was a delight to travel with, and we’ll look forward to doing it again soon.

Just before we left on our trip to Crested Butte, we heard, along with the world, that someone had cut down the famous sycamore tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. It is a sad state of affairs, and sickening that one or two people could upset so many people by killing the famous long-lived tree, over 300 years old, featured in movies, documentaries, and millions of personal photos. When I came across the tree in the pictures below, I wanted to make an homage to lone trees everywhere. I shot it from three different viewpoints and it does appear to be growing up from the center of the rock formation.

After returning from Crested Butte, I wanted more of the autumn colors, so my son Dylan and I hiked up the “Italianos Trail” from the Rio Hondo Canyon. As you know, I had foot surgery earlier this year so I wanted to check out my hiking abilities. I used hiking poles for the first time, and things went very well.
We stopped en route to take some pictures. I only brought my iPhone along, but you know what they say, “The best camera is the one you have with you”.

Here are a couple of images of the Italianos Creek.

Fall Colors, Kebler Pass Road, Colorado

Fall colors, Kebler Pass Road, Colorado. Not far from Lost Lake, outside of Crested Butte, off the Kebler Pass Road to Paonia is this wonderful sight. The shape of things to come very soon in this area. The tips of the cottonwoods and aspen are starting to show their colors. I’m looking forward to it. I’m very fortunate to live where I do. So much of what I love and photograph is in my big back yard. Thanks for looking. G

Paradise Divide, Crested Butte, Colorado

Paradise Divide, Crested Butte, Colorado. On the way to Paradise Divide the road climbs steeply with drop offs to afford spectacular views that open up across the valleys. Mountain rains and breaks in the clouds added to the atmosphere in this picture. It’s very refreshing for me to look at during the excessive heat we’ve experienced lately. Back to New Mexico in tomorrow’s photo. Thanks for looking and all the comments and compliments on my work. G

Slate River, Crested Butte, Colorado

Slate River, Crested Butte, Colorado. Yep, the colors along the banks of the Slate River look like this. I’ve seen similar colors of slate lining walls in homes and more upscale hotels. Where I grew up in Wales the roofs were all blue slate and the houses built from locally quarried stone. This particular geology has the iron colors running throughout. I like it and reminds me of home. Thanks for looking. G

Love Chairs Await, In Crested Butte

Two love chairs await on a side street in Crested Butte Colorado… not sure why you would sit here or love it, the space between doesn’t say much for the proximity of love. Maybe the space between is where love grows. Oh well, here it is!

Craquelure, Crested Butte, Colorado

Craquelure. Aging nicely in Crested Butte, Colorado. Decaying paint work on building siding in the old mining, mountain ski town. Wandering around the town of Crested Butte we find many abstract type images like this one. The town has an abundance of scenes lined up waiting to become images.
