Windmill On The Rio Chama Road

Windmill on the Rio Chama Road to Christ in the Desert Monastery. I’ve spent many summers camping near here with the kids, and made numerous photo tours on the Chama River over the years. I remember when the windmill turned like a airplane propeller in the high winds and the water overflowed the stock tank. Now the rotor is tied off and the pump disconnected. Things change! Thanks for looking. G

The Rio Chama, Abiquiu, New Mexico

The Rio Chama as it passes through the village of Abiquiu, New Mexico. Standing on the banks of this river I realize what draws me to a particular location is the same force that moves the river from the mountains through the canyons, across the desert and finally to the sea. I feel propelled forward as the clouds assist the composition. Thanks for looking. G

A Bend In Rio Chama, Abiquiu, NM

At a bend on the Rio Chama in Abiquiu NM. A warm and clear winters day. I love the subtle colors of a New Mexico winter. I can honestly say I love winter photography excursions. For one thing I am mostly alone with my thoughts and camera. With no distractions and when the mind clears the images come. This image actually accounts for 1/1000 of a second of my day. The rest of the time was spent in a form of meditation of which this image is the appreciation of that moment. Thanks for looking. G

Ice Patterns On The Rio Chama

Ice patterns on the Rio Chama, Abiquiu New Mexico. Exploring, seeking, and open to receiving. Following are some words close to my heart from photographer Dewitt Jones. “The banquet is spread constantly, with no thought of whether anyone will attend. If I were receptive enough, perhaps I would see it in everything. But I’m not, so photography is one of the tools I use to help me concentrate, to help me see deeply, to block out all that is extraneous and see that which is essential.”

Desert Monastery Road Abiquiu, NM

Desert Monastery Road Abiquiu, NM. A scene on the road to Christ in the Desert Monastery with a view to Cerro Pedernal, Georgia O’Keeffe’s mountain. Going through the archives again I pulled this one from 2005. I like the feeling of solitude and space. The tree is no longer there and the road has been graded and improved much since then. One thing hasn’t changed. It’s still a great, off the beaten path, road trip. Thanks for looking. G

Cerrito Blanco, Abiquiu, New Mexico

Cerrito Blanco, Abiquiu, New Mexico. A favorite spot on a photo tour in Georgia O’Keeffe country along the Rio Chama in Abiquiu. One of the stops at the end of the day on a trip there last week. The river was full and reflecting the grey-blue colors of the winter sky as it weaved it’s way past fields and embankments lined with red willow. Thanks for looking. G

Piedra Lumbre (Shining Rock) Abiquiu, NM

Piedra Lumbre (Shining Rock) Land Grant in Abiquiu, NM. On a photo tour last week around Abiquiu and the Rio Chama we pulled over at a favorite location. There were many opportunities for beautiful landscape images that day, as shadows from the clouds passed over the scene. This big plant, not sure what it’s name is, made for a foreground subject that mimicked the shape of the cloud behind the red rock butte. Thanks for looking. G

Christ In The Desert Monastery

Christ in the Desert Monastery on the Rio Chama, New Mexico. I made this image on a photo tour of the Abiquiu area. The monastery road follows the Chama River for thirteen miles through some of the most beautiful terrain in New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G
