Cerro Pedernal Sunset, Crescent Moon, Venus

Cerro Pedernal sunset, Crescent Moon, Venus, across the Taos Volcanic Plateau. One from the archive many moons ago! When I lived on the south side of Taos I would drive up the hill behind our home where this view was a constant reminder of the beauty and one of many reasons I live here. The kids would sometimes join me while I was photographing, they would read their books, do a little homework or simply luxuriate, basking in the scene alongside me. Many memories represented in this image. Thanks for looking. G

Three Peaks Sunset Crescent Moon

Three Peaks Sunset Crescent Moon. Tonight I drove to the turnout to watch the crescent moon set. The orange layer is the fire smoke pollution happening in the area. Above that, the sky is pretty crystal clear and the crescent moon stands out in all it’s glory along with earthshine and a planet. I’m at a loss as to which planet. Any ideas? At this time of year, with predominantly clear skies overhead, living in the high desert is a magical earthly experience. Thanks for looking. G

Winter Trees, Crescent Moon

Winter Trees and Crescent Moon, The last few nights have been wonderful for watching the waxing moon. The temperatures are quite temperate adding to sky watching pleasure. And really… we don’t have to go to far, just step out on to the deck and look west. When it does eventually chill down there’s always a little whiskey and my lovely woman Pami. Thanks for looking. G

Jemez Mountains Sunset, Crescent Moon

Jemez Mountains sunset and crescent moon from San Cristobal, NM. I made this three image vertical stitched panorama of the sunset over the mountains. The sunset was fading fast, so when I found I couldn’t fit in the whole scene with the lens I had on the camera, rather than run into the house to change lenses, I used what I had. One, two, three and this beautiful scene was in the can. Thanks for looking. G

Sliver Of A Crescent Moon, San Cristobal

Beautiful sliver of a crescent moon with earthshine tonight, from San Cristobal New Mexico. I love the surprise and flutter in my chest that occurs when I see the crescent moon in the western sky at sunset. I’ve observed it so many times and still it continues to amaze me every time. I hope it does for you too! Thanks for looking. G

Three Peaks, Crescent Moon Sunset

Three Peaks, crescent moon sunset, Taos, New Mexico. The simplicity is so beautiful. The crescent moon suspended there over the high desert plateau, punctuates the twilight as if to say “There another day passes! How was it?” Thanks for looking. G

Crescent Moon Rise San Cristobal

Crescent Moon Rise over the Sangre de Cristo foothills, San Cristobal, New Mexico. I got up early to see the thinest sliver (1%) of a waning moon rise over the hills behind the house. It was still dark when I made this image and as the sun rose the crescent blended in to the light of day. It will return tomorrow as a “new moon”. I think I’ll sleep in. Thanks for looking. G

Fall Equinox Crescent Moon

Fall Equinox Crescent Moon this evening from San Cristobal, NM. A momentary break in the clouds following the sunset this evening, revealed a beautiful sliver of a moon, and then it was gone. At least in the view from our garden. Thanks for looking. G

Crescent Moon Set Over Cerro Pedernal

Crescent moon set over Cerro Pedernal near Abiquiu, New Mexico. I made this image from the foothills south of Taos. It’s a view I’ve enjoyed many times, though the crescent moon isn’t always present. Without the moon it is still a stunning vista. Cerro Pedernal, is also Spanish for “Flint Hill”, and, as it is known locally … “Georgia O’Keeffe’s Mountain.” Apparently god told Georgia that if she painted the mountain often enough it would become her mountain, or something to that effect. For me it is a peak where native people harvested flint for their tips and points, and a sight that can be seen prominently from many locations around northern New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G
