Crescent moon set over Cerro Pedernal near Abiquiu, New Mexico. I made this image from the foothills south of Taos. It’s a view I’ve enjoyed many times, though the crescent moon isn’t always present. Without the moon it is still a stunning vista. Cerro Pedernal, is also Spanish for “Flint Hill”, and, as it is known locally … “Georgia O’Keeffe’s Mountain.” Apparently god told Georgia that if she painted the mountain often enough it would become her mountain, or something to that effect. For me it is a peak where native people harvested flint for their tips and points, and a sight that can be seen prominently from many locations around northern New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G
Taos Tipis Sunset, south of Taos, and again this picture is “enhanced” by the continuing forest fire smoke to the west of Taos. I like the atmosphere and the glow it creates in this scene. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so the natural smoke filter may not be available for much longer. That will be a good thing! Thanks for looking. G
Highway sky. Heading south in to Taos, NM on highway 522, the sunset casts an eerie twilight glow over the mesa roadway and reflects off the cloud poised over the Sangre de Cristo foothills. The sun setting behind and through the fire smoke, filtering the light from the west, created this effect. I like the look of the image but the smoke in the atmosphere is getting tiresome. Boards with shadows abstract, sans explanation, save to say the smoke from a fire west of Taos, diluting any opportunity for a gorgeous sunset this evening, found me going through the archive again. The church of San Juan De Los Lagos Talpa, New Mexico. After numerous days on the road in southern Colorado photographing birds of prey and abandoned homesteads we travel close to home and find some simple lines in the afternoon light on a “Sites of Taos” photo tour. Thanks for looking. G
Full “Strawberry Moon” rising over El Salto Peak in the Sangre de Cristos, Taos New Mexico. It got very quiet this evening, a kind of eerie silence as the moon peaked over the ridge. No dog, bird, or coyote sounds, as if the whole neighborhood stood still and paid attention. G

After a road trip around the block (about 200 miles) yesterday we arrived back at the high bridge, overlooking the Rio Grande Gorge, and were greeted by this wonderful sight. There were some tourists on the bridge with phones doing their thing. The bachelor heard of bighorn sheep were munching alongside the parking lot. We had our intentions set on a fitting image to end our day trip. I like the way the shape of the clouds mirror the shape where the light and shadows meet on the opposite canyon wall. Mesa road to the mountains under a big southwest sky, Taos, New Mexico. Just after a rain shower moved through the area the scent of wet sage filled the air and all was well with the world. At least that is how it felt standing in this little spot on the mesa looking to the mountains. Thanks for looking. G
