Moon Set South West Of Taos

Moon set south west of Taos this morning. We left before dawn for Santa Fe. Although we had to get up earlier than usual we were accompanied by the very large setting moon. It appeared stranded, poised to enter the “belt of Venus” the earths shadow cast on the sky, (the blue band) and Cerro Pedernal. Cerro Pedernal is the flat top mountain in distance, familiar landmark in Abiquiu, Georgia O’Keeffe country. We were flanked by the moon for twenty more miles before it vanished in the ether. It was a beautiful start to the day. Thanks for looking. G

Mist Rising On Taos Mountain

Mist rising on Taos Mountain. I called this one “The Reveal” as we sat and watched the mist dissolve and later turn to snow. It was a fantastic day of interactions between the weather, the land and sky, me and the camera. Thanks for looking. G

Bighorn Sheep Ram, Rio Grande Gorge Rim

Bighorn Sheep ram, on the rim in the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. The Bighorn Sheep were a “big” feature on a photo tour/workshop today on the Sites of Taos, the Rio Grande Gorge and Beyond. It was a grand day, filled with spectacular clouds, New Mexico blue skies, rain, hail, and snow, all in good company and image making. Thanks to my guest photographers and thanks for looking. G

Taos Volcanic Field Sunset

Taos Volcanic Field Sunset. A momentary glimpse of the sunset. A moment and it was gone. Then the hail came and whitened the land. Overnight it turned to hoar frost. By breakfast it was gone and by noon it made it into the low fifties. Spring is a misnomer … spring would be better referred to as “changeling” a season of change, as nothing is sprung as of yet! Thanks for looking. G

Cedar Waxwing, Downtown Taos

Cedar Waxwing, downtown Taos, New Mexico. Foraging around the Russian Olive trees between Mickey D’s and Ace Hardware. Maybe three of them and a few Robins. This one settled on the big rock for a few shots. Then they all, including the Robins, took off! Read more about the Cedar Waxwing here. Thanks for looking. G

Spring In The Rocky Mountains

Spring in the Rocky Mountains (Sangre de Cristos) the Moreno Valley. How quickly the weather changes at this time of year during spring. In the space of a few miles and thirty minutes later after lunch the difference follows the old adage… if you don’t like the weather in New Mexico, wait five minutes. In this instance the wind and snow became a blizzard. By the mid afternoon it was gone! Thanks for looking. G

Hello Spring! Sangre De Cristo Mountain Moon Rise

Hello spring! Sangre De Cristo mountain moon rise. Life out the kitchen window, constantly awe inspiring. So much so I went out in to the garden this evening to see, smell and feel the potential shift in the air. Thanks for looking. G

Spring, Lime Creek, Valley Of The Gods, Utah

Spring cottonwood trees, in Lime Creek, Valley Of The Gods, Utah. I love the red rocks and lush foliage of the cottonwood trees. It was quite lush in most of the places we visited earlier this month in the four corners. Thanks for looking. G

Cottonwoods, Red Willows And A Vulture

Cottonwoods, red willows and a vulture in Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico. After I made images in the valley yesterday, I headed home. Cresting the hill, above the valley I had another view looking back at this cozy little scene which was graced, momentarily, by a Turkey Vulture. As the sun goes down the Turkey Vultures head to a communal roost in large cottonwoods. There is a group who spend the summer in a tree on Kit Carson Road in downtown Taos. Links below.
