“Ladder to the Moon” ode to Georgia O’Keeffe for her birthday today. Born: Georgia Totto O’Keeffe, Nov 15, 1887, Town of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, U.S. Died: Mar 6, 1986, Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S. She would be 122. It seems like she is ever present in these parts still. I composited this from three images. Thanks for looking. G
Golden Eagle, with breakfast, of a road kill deer on Bobcat Pass, NM. Throwback Thursday or flashback Friday depending on when you see my post. I made this image in 2012. I actually used another shot of this bird in my book, which is being reprinted in Canada as we speak. I’m very excited and looking forward to when the Museum of New Mexico Press re-issues it. I thought I would share this image for the birds impressive, regal posture and downright powerful nature. Oh! … and it’s willingness to acknowledge my presence and it’s ability to stay focussed on the meal at hand. Thanks for looking. G
Morning moon today, under the Elm tree in San Cristobal, NM. Further west of the elm lies the volcanic plateau where the moon will vanish beyond ancient, extinct volcanoes and cinder cones. Thanks for looking. G
Taos Mountain, meadow, wild cloud. I can’t resist pulling over at this location and I feel sure you recognize the view. In this instance the cloud formed very quickly and blew away on the breeze in but a moment. I had just time enough to pull over and take two photos to stitch into this panorama. Thanks for looking. G
Vallecito (little valley), Mountain, Moonrise, Taos, NM. A couple of quick images out of the car window on the road home this evening. I was on a very beautiful, but very chilly, photo shoot on the west rim of the Rio Grande Gorge earlier. At this point I was quite happy to sit in the car with the heat blasting, some soft tunes playing and watching this gorgeous moon rise over the peaks. Thanks for looking. G
Moonrise, Sangre De Cristo Mountains, NM. The kitchen window or the deck usually work fine for a shot of the moon. This month I had to stand in the middle of the driveway (poor me) in order to line up the tree and mountain with the moon. I hope you got to see it from where ever you are. Thanks for looking. G
Dark-eyed Junco, in the garden in San Cristobal, NM. This little guy survived my boot as I walked across the deck. I spotted one Dark-eyed Junco on the ground after hitting a window on the house. I picked it up and almost stepped on this bird which flew up on to the patio chair and stayed there. This bird may have hit a window also. It stayed here while and I made some images. The bird I had picked up, was now resting on a fence post in the sun where I left it. The incident concluded with both birds flying off, hopefully not too worse for ware. I’ll be adding decals to the windows to warn these little creatures. Thanks for looking. G
Elk, Sunlight, Yellowstone, Wyoming. Elk are spotlighted on the hillside by the last pocket of sunlight in Yellowstone, Wyoming. Flashback to my trip with my two young children in 2005. In Yellowstone it was so cold, although it doesn’t look like it from this image, we stayed in hotels and lodges. On the way home through Utah we camped for a few nights in Canyonlands. High Road Shadows, Truchas, NM. On the High Road to Taos is the mountain town of Truchas, New Mexico where Robert Redford made the movie “Milagro Beanfield War” from the book of the same name by Taos author, John Nichols. John very graciously wrote the foreword in my book for which I will always be grateful. Thank you John, and thanks for looking. G
Tipi sky, Ranchos De Taos, New Mexico. Digging in the archives and clearing out the virtual stuffed closet today I found this image of the tipis, south of Taos, near where I used to live. In the evening, around sunset, I would pop down the road, a mile or so from home, to watch and wait as the scene unfolded. Thanks for looking. G
