Ghost Ranch Corral, a movie set in Abiquiu, New Mexico. A quick snap before the thunder and lightning storm hit and we had to get back in the car. Being the tallest thing out there hanging on to a tripod with a cable release is about as smart as a golfer running for cover clutching a nine iron. A beautiful day with a moment of sanity thrown in. Nicho, San Francisco de Asis, across the plaza from the church named for him in Ranchos de Taos. It’s a sweet little santo in a nicho in the wall under the portal at the gift shop. Thanks for looking. G
Saint Francis Church, Ranchos de Taos, with pigeons and “the” gas meter. More often than not the gas meter is left out by painters (paintshopping), or erased in a photo application. but left in here, by yours truly, for authenticity. The rocks ringing the building are to stop people parking too close to the walls and buttresses. They make for a nice foreground contrast and a place to sit. Thanks for looking. G
Full moon rising, Columbine Hondo Wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. Crystal clear this evening. The sky, the moon and a glass of Talisker from the Isle of Skye. Not bad in my world. Thanks for looking. G
Isolated storm cell approaching San Cristobal and points north. One of those moments where I just have to pull over and watch what happens. I always make an image, for the record, but didn’t think this one would have much impact at this point. When I awoke this morning I heard my wife exclaim “look how green things are”! The fields and grass were noticeably brighter. This one had become an overnight ground soaker. Thanks for looking. G
Columbine Hondo Wilderness Rainbow. There was a moment this evening when I suspected a rainbow but we were also hoping for a significant, almost full, moon rise. So we made a drive into the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, under the waning light of a brooding New Mexico sky. There was a rainbow, it wasn’t huge, but on the drive through the Carson National Forest the landscape was beautiful and damp, the hills, for a moment reminded me of Wales. The rain diminished for a couple of hours since then. It’s back now, pounding on the steel roof and sparkling in the porch light. The air is fresh and a wonderful cool breeze is passing through the hallways in the house. I’m optimistic I’ll still see the moon. Thanks for looking. G
Warp, Reed, Loom, Weft. We spent almost three hours today at Tres Estrellas Designs in Taos, New Mexico. Our hosts, Chris and Carla Ferguson, regaled us with stories, anecdotes,wisdom and a wealth of knowledge on Hispanic and Indigenous Textiles of Old Mexico. They also have a large collection of Navajo weavings, including exquisite “Chiefs Blankets” from the 1800’s. There is also an original Edward S. Curtis photo gravure of “Navajo Riders in Canyon de Chelly”. I found a serape that I like very much. I might have to put that next camera on hold. Carla was working on the loom while we spoke. Cerro Pedernal sunset, Crescent Moon, Venus, across the Taos Volcanic Plateau. One from the archive many moons ago! When I lived on the south side of Taos I would drive up the hill behind our home where this view was a constant reminder of the beauty and one of many reasons I live here. The kids would sometimes join me while I was photographing, they would read their books, do a little homework or simply luxuriate, basking in the scene alongside me. Many memories represented in this image. Thanks for looking. G
Dwelling, Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. Renovation in progress! I first saw this building totally gutted with debris from the demolition filling the shell. A year later the walls are structurally sound and the vigas are in place awaiting a roof. The occupant will get to see for miles out that window, as indeed we did when standing on the mesa top at the Pueblo. One item of note… I like the way they have interspersed the round vigas with square beams. A nice touch. If you haven’t visited Acoma Pueblo, I recommend a visit there, more than once. Earth and sky. The Penitente Morada under a northern New Mexico sky in the Village of Abiquiu, just up the hill from Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio. This image is from a full day photo tour a few weeks ago in Abiquiu and the Chama River Valley. The dramatic skies continue, which is great for adding drama to the landscape and iconic architecture of New Mexico.
