Bison, Philmont Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico

Bison at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico. When I spotted this bison I wanted to accentuate the lonely, solitary feeling it portrayed, using an antique filter. I thought it conjured up an image of the loss of millions upon millions of these stunning and majestic animals. I used three images to create this old glass plate look. The first of the bison, the second, an overlay color and third, a dirty window from an abandoned cabin I found. Thanks for looking. G

Golden Eagle, Pole Sitting, Vallecito Mountain

Golden Eagle, pole sitting, on the Hondo Mesa with Vallecito Mountain for a backdrop. I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a hawk from a distance, but grew larger as I closed the distance. I’m not a hundred percent certain it’s a golden but I’m going with it. Thanks for looking. G

Texture, Corbels, Vigas, Shadows, Taos, NM

Texture, Corbels, Vigas, and Shadows, Kit Carson Road, Taos, NM. There’s plenty of this kind of thing around New Mexico, and especially in the northern half of the state. Perhaps a new tagline for this part of the state might be “the land of long shadows”. At this time of year “golden” or “magic” hour lasts  longer than most places, and art history in the area reaches back long before Europeans landed. Thanks for looking. G

Jemez Mountains, Sunset, Lenticular Clouds

Jemez Mountains, sunset, shark fin lenticular clouds. I saw the fins in the clouds after I loaded the image in Photoshop®. I like the way the clouds settled over the distant volcano and caldera. I shot this from the Arroyo Hondo mesa before the Moon and Venus revealed themselves after sunset. Thanks for looking. G

Cattle Dogs, Bulls, Horses, Round Up

Cattle dogs, bulls, horses, on a winter round up in La Jara, Colorado. Yes, that’s gonna work!!!
These were obstinate bulls and tenacious cattle dogs. The rancher on horse back told the dogs either to “get ’em” or “bite ’em”. The one blue healer there, on the tail end of the bull, really reveled in it’s work. The things we see on the road. Thanks for looking. G

Rio Grande Gorge, Hwy 142 Colorado

Rio Grande Gorge, from the bridge on Hwy 142 Colorado, or as I like to call it, ‘where the Rio Grande Gorge begins’. The rock walls, here, begin to rise above the river, now frozen in the throes of winter. From this spot, I could hear the ice groaning, moaning and stretching against the rocks and bridge pylons, much as my joints feel on cold winter mornings. Thanks for looking. G

Bald Eagle, Monte Vista, Colorado

Bald Eagle, Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado. On a “photo safari” in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado this week with my good friend R. David Marks. We may not encounter the big game one might on an African safari, but the excitement of discovering a Bald Eagle, high in an old cottonwood, is no less exciting. Join me on a “photo safari” in our own back yard. Thanks for looking. G
