Lobatos steel bridge (circa 1890), crossing the frozen Rio Grande in southern Colorado. It’s cold, infact freezing cold out here. So cold the Lobatos bridge is locked in ridged, eerie silence, by the ice. We are alone under the late afternoon sky. Solitude prevails on this day, nothing exists, just us and the cold. Dark-Eyed Juncos, in the garden and the snow today. I had fun hanging out with about five dozen of these little ones storming the bird feeders today. They were unafraid of the guy with the camera in polar gear, and as long as I stood still they stayed around, happily devouring a few pounds of seed. Over the last six days they’ve gone through 30 pounds of seed. And me? After I darned near froze my fingers off and the battery in the camera died in the 20º temps, it was time for a cup of tea! Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Velarde, NM. Gorgeous day along the Rio Grande in the village of Velarde. I love the way the New Mexico light makes iconic locations around the state just glow against the blue sky. Not too many places like it. I’m taking a liberty saying that, but almost all of the photographers I’ve taken out on photo tours agree. Thanks for looking. G
Bison at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico. When I spotted this bison I wanted to accentuate the lonely, solitary feeling it portrayed, using an antique filter. I thought it conjured up an image of the loss of millions upon millions of these stunning and majestic animals. I used three images to create this old glass plate look. The first of the bison, the second, an overlay color and third, a dirty window from an abandoned cabin I found. Thanks for looking. G
Golden Eagle, pole sitting, on the Hondo Mesa with Vallecito Mountain for a backdrop. I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a hawk from a distance, but grew larger as I closed the distance. I’m not a hundred percent certain it’s a golden but I’m going with it. Thanks for looking. G
Texture, Corbels, Vigas, and Shadows, Kit Carson Road, Taos, NM. There’s plenty of this kind of thing around New Mexico, and especially in the northern half of the state. Perhaps a new tagline for this part of the state might be “the land of long shadows”. At this time of year “golden” or “magic” hour lasts longer than most places, and art history in the area reaches back long before Europeans landed. Thanks for looking. G
Snow white and blue, in the town of Blanca, Colorado. That’s about all I can say on this shot, except, I liked the organic shape of undulations in the snow set against the rigid lines of the door. Thanks for looking. G
Sky watching across the Taos Volcanic Field and Plateau. Just a couple of city blocks from the house in San Cristobal there is a turn out that serves as a bit of an overlook. Not a bad spot for an overlook for that matter. Thanks for looking. G
Jemez Mountains, sunset, shark fin lenticular clouds. I saw the fins in the clouds after I loaded the image in Photoshop®. I like the way the clouds settled over the distant volcano and caldera. I shot this from the Arroyo Hondo mesa before the Moon and Venus revealed themselves after sunset. Thanks for looking. G
