Autumn colors in the Columbine Hondo Wilderness. This is the view out the back door where we live in the mountain hamlet of San Cristobal, New Mexico. We’ll be heading out on some personal trips and multiple day photo tours over the next few weeks to photograph the Autumn colors of northern New Mexico. Mule Deer this afternoon in Red River NM. We spotted her munching on the shrubs along the forest road. I reversed up twenty yards, thinking that she’d probably take off and vanish into the trees. She did nothing! She just kept on grazing and chewing the plants that certainly didn’t look appetizing to us, but obviously she knew something we didn’t. The fall colors are finding their way through the trees on the hillsides, a gorgeous lei on the Red River Valley. Thanks for looking. G
Taos Mountain evening light. The light was changing rapidly on the Sangre de Cristo mountains as I watched from the car driving home. The clouds were moving fast. I pulled over and made four images to create this panorama, out of the window. This was the only moment I caught before the big cloud filled in the foreground. The light, the clouds, me, the camera and this fleeting moment. Click. Thanks for looking. G
Door, cut nails, steel hardware. I don’t remember where this was but I’m thinking Estaca, New Mexico, a little village on the Rio Grande. I was attracted, at first, by the look of authenticity when I saw the cut nails and latch. On closer inspection I spotted that the latch was more modern, a nicely fashioned piece at that. I think the little rusting handle is currently available at any hardware store. The upside down keyhole plate looks solid. All in all I like the shot. The latch will tarnish considerable after a few more years. The wood will continue weather and everything will disintegrate beautiful into the realm of some era of authenticity. Thanks for looking. G
Aspen road, Garcia Park in the Carson National Forest, New Mexico. The backlighting sets the colors off well but there is still plenty of color to come over the next few weeks. Every day will amount to an “aspencade”. We’ll be checking for stands of color “going off” on the hills and mountainside around Taos, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. The red scrub oak is already accenting the valleys and arroyos. Soon it will be the mighty cottonwoods along the Rio Grande and it’s tributaries. Then all we’ll need is the scent of cedar and piñon smoke in the air in order to round out this little bit of perfection. Thanks for looking. G
Christmas decorations year round in El Rito, New Mexico. They’re a little more faded now, but I thought they added a nice touch, surrounding the doorway to this boarded up building. The main room has an intact, pressed tin ceiling and a solitary bare light bulb hanging there. All in all, this old dance hall (according to a local) has some potential for the right developer. Another local we met, proposed that we open a grocery store in the village, to which we politely declined. Anyway, as always, thanks for looking. G
Italianos Trail, Leaf, Rock, Lichen in the Columbine Hondo Wilderness. The leaf had landed here, or someone had placed it here, it doesn’t matter. When my son and I hiked here yesterday we saw many reminders that fall is on it’s way. Last week in southern Colorado we saw numerous groves of aspen, high up, starting to catch on a different kind of fire. I have a few days open if anyone is interested in photographing the fall colors on a private photo tour/workshop. Thanks for looking. G
Venus and the crescent Moon over the Volcanic Plateau, west of Taos, New Mexico. Made a short drive south to a wonderful vantage point to watch the sunset, followed by the Moon and Venus emerging out of the light. I hope you get out over the next few days and see for yourself. Thanks for looking. G
Sangre De Cristo foothills, near Lama, NM. We caught the end of the day’s light as the sun peeped out from a letterbox opening on the horizon. Besides the lighting, the landscape was looking very lush and a little bit tropical during this summer’s monsoons. Not to bad for an area that burned 22 years ago in the “Hondo Fire”. White house with hay bales, San Luis Valley, Colorado. I never miss an opportunity to pull over at this location near the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, which is just discernible on the right in front of the mountains. The hay bales add an element making the place feel less abandoned, almost like someone might be home. Thanks for looking. G
