Rural southern Colorado, Ute Mountain, barn. Gorgeous skies and the last snow fall across the valley. Hopefully not the last snow of the winter. This was less than a week ago. Today all the snow is gone and temps were in the mid 50’s F. The ice was gone on the lake. I was standing on the same ice a week ago. Today felt like the refreshing, first day of spring. Raven sitting on a fence post in a sun shower enjoying the last rays of light at sunset. Another raven was on a nearby post, with a lot to say as ravens often do. This bird didn’t answer or do much of anything. I like to think perhaps, it was actually enjoying the moment. Thanks for looking. G
Red Barn, Green Gate, Sandhill Cranes. Made another quick trip up the the National Wildlife Refuge today, where we saw so many Sandhill Cranes, thousands of Canada geese and two Snow Geese. If you have a chance this weekend to make a trip to this area you wont be disappointed. The one thing that really gets me is the call of the cranes. Thanks for continuing to look. G
Crooked Cross, San Luis Valley, Colorado. I like the casual, rakish tilt of the cross on this authentic belfry with the exposed bell. These days the majority of bells are enclosed to keep out the pigeons, doves and other critters, you know, bats in the belfry. Thanks for looking. G
Adobe shadows, Costilla, NM. There are a lot of ruins in New Mexico, but this is my favorite in Costilla on the state line with Colorado. It was a pristinely clear day. The adobe was set against a deep blue sky with the light reflected off the snow filling in the shadows on the adobe walls. Oh and there is a partial moon up there in the left hand corner. Sangre de Cristo light on snow capped peaks. Following the golden glow and drama on the peaks in yesterday’s image, this reddish color glimmered as the last moment. Thanks for looking. G
Fire on the mountain. The last rays of sunlight on the Sangre de Cristo mountains set them on fire this evening. The thirty mile drive took us a little longer than usual. I mean, we just had to stop and join the mountains saying good night to the sun. Thanks for looking. G
Ute Mountain Tree, Costilla, New Mexico. The tree and numerous others, flank the old volcano on the Taos Volcanic Field. The direction of the prevailing wind is quite obvious. No wind today though at Ute Mountain, just cold. Thanks for looking. G
Monte Vista NWR, Colorado. Sandhill Cranes, and Canada Geese. There was a lot of coming and going today during an afternoon trip to Colorado across the San Luis Valley. We saw thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese at this hub on the birds migratory flyway north. The primordial calls of the cranes and geese echoed through the trees and over the marshes, as they have done for millions of years. Snow plant, Valdez NM. I think I will rest here a while, until spring comes. I feel a lot like this plant. Gathering energy, ready for bursting out like its buds in spring time. This image was in Valdez at the San Antonio Church, one day following a snow storm. Two feet of snow around the neighborhood covered most everything. Today, after temps in the mid fifties, most of the snow is gone. Thanks for looking. G
