San Antonio Mountain Cloud

San Antonio Mountain with a cloud, on the New Mexico, Colorado state line. We were heading north for a short evening drive. This cloud was coursing over the volcanic plateau, keeping up with my driving. When the cloud was positioned directly over San Antonio Mountain I pulled over and made this image. This mountain is an extinct volcano and is the largest free standing mountain in the 48 states. The plateau is dotted with many old volcanoes, and lava cones. This area is a beautiful part of our state with great subject matter for photography. It is featured on my San Luis Valley photo tours. Thanks for looking. G

Culvert, Adobe Shadows, San Cristobal

Culvert, with adobe shadows in the village of San Cristobal. Sometimes I take a walk through the village to pick up the mail and say “hello” to those I meet. I wave at a passing car and snap a few photos with the iPhone. I’ve been fascinated for some time with this culvert in the field of a neighbor. I’m sure the fascination with this scene will continue. Chama River, Abiquiu, New Mexico

Chama River, where it runs through Abiquiu, New Mexico. A beautiful day for a photo tour around the Abiquiu area this week. The skies were stunning. The day started out looking like rain with snow imminent, but as the old adage says “If you don’t like the weather in New Mexico… wait five minutes.” I’ve heard this said for Utah too. This day, on the Chama River, the weather changed in the time it took to drive down the hill between Georgia O’Keeffe’s house and Bode’s General Store in the village of Abiquiu, approximately two minutes away. Could be a record. Thanks for looking. G

Bald Eagle, Sangre De Cristo Mountain Snows

Bald Eagle, with a backdrop of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains covered in snow. With such a commanding view it’s no wonder we’ve seen this raptor, numerous times, at this location. It’s also a great place to stop and admire the view for ourselves. If we’re fortunate we may see this bird again next week on a return trip to the area. Thanks for looking. G

Winter light, on the hay bales, capped with snow. Another fabulous day in the richly diverse San Luis Valley of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. The winter light really sets this valley off, with farms, fields, abandoned homesteads, raptors and wildlife. Thanks for looking. G

Kiln drying sticks, at the Blanca Sawmill, Colorado. These kiln sticks are part of a kiln drying operation I’ve had the privilege to photograph over the last couple of years. This kiln can dry 200,000 board feet of green 2×4 and 2×6 lumber in 90 hours. The lumber mill supplies studs to the building industry around the west. The lumber comes from the Blanca Ranch on the slopes of the Blanca Massif in southern Colorado. Thanks for looking. G

Here’s another image I made in the winter of 1989 that I posted it on my website on a winter’s day in March 2007 and funnily enough it looked like this today when the clouds lifted off the mountain. Rock, Bush, Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, New Mexico. Flash floods whisk through the narrow slot canyon, down arroyos, through culverts and in to the Rio Chama. This rock stands firm with it’s head dress glowing in the afternoon, winter sunlight. All around, the debris from flash flooding has stripped the bark off the few cottonwoods and deposited brush and rocks in many of the nooks and crannies in the wash. Yesterday was a good day for a walk is this beautiful landscape of New Mexico. Thanks for looking. G
