A moody morning sky, at the St. Francis Church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. The fast moving clouds filtered the sun making it look as if in a hurry to rise. The heavy silhouette of the adobe church building held fast to the ground and the earth from which it is built, while the sky swirled over and around it. Thanks for looking. G
“Wookiees”. Faces along the Rio Grande in the embankment. As the grasses and branches wilt and dip down into the winter water reflections abound, faces appear, on occasion maleficent looking, other times beneficent. I see what I see. What do you see? Thanks for looking. G
Ice patterns on the Rio Chama, Abiquiu New Mexico. Exploring, seeking, and open to receiving. Following are some words close to my heart from photographer Dewitt Jones. “The banquet is spread constantly, with no thought of whether anyone will attend. If I were receptive enough, perhaps I would see it in everything. But I’m not, so photography is one of the tools I use to help me concentrate, to help me see deeply, to block out all that is extraneous and see that which is essential.”

Cerro Pedernal (Georgia O’Keeffe’s mountain) through the rock pools at Abiquiu Lake. Always on the look out for new views everywhere… putting the camera on the ground reveals a composition I hadn’t discovered before. I like to look at the creations of painters and sculptors as my main inspiration. Perhaps I’ll take up painting one day soon… the studio is already full with pieces of sculpture. I’m very fortunate to be continually connected, daily, to the natural environment. I am nature! Thanks for looking. G
Snapshot on the iPhone, from the Rio Pueblo on a photo trip today. The Rio Pueblo canyon in northern NM with red willows and cascading water, near the confluence with the Rio Grande. Another beautiful day in this corner of paradise. Thanks for looking. G
Dawson cemetery, in Colfax County, New Mexico. Dawson was the site of two separate coal mining disasters in 1913 and 1923. Dawson is located about 17 miles northeast of Cimarron, New Mexico. The township is gone but the cemetery remains. Growing up in a mining community in south Wales in the UK, it can be very moving to see the grave markers of the hundreds who died in two extreme mining accidents in this former township. I made this image last August when the afternoon sunlight through the thunderstorms and sunflowers accompanied the white grave markers of those killed in the two separate disasters. Hood ornament on a Dodge “Job Rated” Truck. We love these old trucks and cars left in fields, abandoned on verges or in roadside hedgerows, parked in front yards and on occasion in found in arroyos and ravines. Now homes to varmints and hornets, they still romanticize a fascination with a bygone era. Thanks for looking. G
High road to Taos homestead. Sometimes it’s just about something tickling the funny bone, like this house for example. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Are windows the eyes to the heart of the home? This house appears to be peeking out through a mask back at us! Thanks for looking. G
Chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Cañon, Taos NM. One cross many shadows. This little chapel is adorned with at least nine crosses on the outside. If one counts them and all the shadows, then I’m sure this is a very blessed place, and iconic New Mexicana. Always a favorite stop on a photo tour. Thanks for looking. G
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne on the northeast coast of England. Lobster pots, stone houses with red tiled roofs, a mead distillery, an island cut off from the mainland by the tide twice a day, where tourists abound, except on this blustery grey day. A flashback image to October 2013 on the holy island. Of course, we didn’t mind missing the crossing as there was always plenty to see and photograph and drink! Thanks for looking. G
