Golden Eagle, pole sitting, on the Hondo Mesa with Vallecito Mountain for a backdrop. I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a hawk from a distance, but grew larger as I closed the distance. I’m not a hundred percent certain it’s a golden but I’m going with it. Thanks for looking. G

Geraint,
It looks like that hawk I saw crossing the road just North of El Prado the other day with some prey in its talons. Could it be a rough legged? I used to see them every winter in the 80s out on the Hondo mesa
Curious as to location, Vallecito Mtn in the Needle Mtns of the San Juan Range is maybe ten miles from a pole with a wire. ie. smack dab in the middle of the Weminuche area. Is there a Vallecito Mtn in NM? Thanks, Beautiful bird.

Hi Mark, yes we have a Vallecito Mountain here in Taos, just north of Taos and Taos Mountain. Here’s another view. https://geraintsmith.com/gorgeous-moonrise-vallecito-peak/
Thanks Mark. G
